Working Trials

Working Trials has sometimes be described as the civilian form of police dog training. Dogs are taught three different types of exercises, Nosework, Agility and Control. Many of the elements in working trials are a development of the skills learnt in the obedience.

Nosework: The dog uses its sense of smell to follow a track which has been laid by a person not known to the dog, (the track can be up to ½ a mile long) across grass, scrub or ploughed land. The dogs follow the track locating articles which have been laid along the way.

The dogs also use their sense of smell to find articles which have been placed in a marked area, which is often over grown. As dogs have a very strong sense of smell, they really enjoy the nosework exercises.

Agility: Dogs jump hurdles, long jumps and climb a six foot scale.

Control: Dogs do various exercises including heelwork, send-aways, stays and steadiness to gunshot noises.

Are competitions held?

Yes a couple of times a year, competitions are held, with judges coming over from the UK.

How do I get involved in Working Trials?

The working trials section is the smallest section of our club, to partake in working trials, dogs must first have a good level of obedience. The cost of each class is £2.
